چکیده

A very large schlieren optical system (2.3x2.9m field-of-view) and its applications in thermal airflow visualization, high-speed imaging of shock waves, and full-scale equipment studies are described. In order to have such a large field-of-view this is a lens-and-grid-type schlieren system using a very large grid as a light source, as first described at the 7 ISFV. It is currently the largest indoor schlieren system in the world. Examples of many full-scale airflows and heat-transfer problems visualized in the last decade are shown. These include heating and ventilation airflows, the thermal plumes of people, the aerodynamics of an explosive trace detection portal, gas leak detection, shock wave motion associated with aviation security problems, and the discharge of firearms. Planned future projects at full scale are also discussed.

Speed Detection in Wind-Tunnels by processing Schlieren Images (RESEARCH NOTE)

Schlieren imaging in wind-tunnels is extensively utilized to study the effects of air on an airplane surface. One of the interesting subjects for research is to study the effects of speed change on the airplane surface. Speed change results in occurrence of shock waves, which are visualized as lines on Schlieren images. In this paper, we study the problem of detecting speed of a plane after occ...

Demonstration of the applicability of a Background Oriented Schlieren ( BOS ) method

A novel measurement technique based on the refractive index variation in a compressible flow field is presented. This concept is referred to as “Background Oriented Schlieren” (BOS) method in the following. The differences between BOS and other optical techniques which it can best be compared with, will be discussed. Already the first results illustrate an encouraging prospect for the future ap...

Schlieren imaging of loud sounds and weak shock waves in air near the limit of visibility

A large schlieren system with exceptional sensitivity and a high-speed digital camera are used to visualize loud sounds and a variety of common phenomena that produce weak shock waves in the atmosphere. Frame rates varied from 10,000 to 30,000 frames/s with microsecond frame exposures. Sound waves become visible to this instrumentation at frequencies above 10 kHz and sound pressure levels in th...

Analyzing Mixing Inhomogeneity in a Microfluidic Device by Microscale Schlieren Technique.

In this paper, we introduce the use of microscale schlieren technique to measure mixing inhomogeneity in a microfluidic device. The microscale schlieren system is constructed from a Hoffman modulation contrast microscope, which provides easy access to the rear focal plane of the objective lens, by removing the slit plate and replacing the modulator with a knife-edge. The working principle of mi...

Schlieren Measurements of a High Density Z-Pinch

The dense plasma phase of a dynamic z-pinch working at a high filling pressure is studied. By using the Schlieren-technique it is found that the compressed plasma column, though macroscopically stable for times less than 1 /us develops quickly from a homogeneous state to a turbulent one with a perturbation scale length of typically some millimeters. Quantitative measurements of light deflection...
